Restored Ole Chevy – Good News by Vic Dove

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”

Jeremiah 33:3

In my younger days, I owned a 1967 Super Sport Chevelle car. The story behind how I acquired this car is intriguing to say the least.

One day in the early fall of 1979, I was out riding the back roads of Lamar County, Mississippi, when out of the corner of my eye I saw something shiny sitting in an old lean-to shelter, which was right beside an old wood frame farm house. The place looked deserted, limbs were laying everywhere, the grass had not been mowed, and it was apparent that no one had lived there for some time. As I continued to nose around the place, I walked over to investigate the shiny object that had earlier caught my eye. When I first walked under the lean-to shelter, I saw part of a partially exposed chrome bumper. I reached over and pulled back the dusty old tarpaulin, and my eyes flew wide open- it was a white 1967 Super Sport Chevelle. Now this may not mean much to some folks, but I hollered,” Wow!” When I hollered the guys that were with me came running. They thought I had been snake bit or something. Well, after everyone found out I was ok, and saw the car we began to investigate further. We raised the hood and saw two clean shiny valve covers of a 396 cubic inch engine. Inside the car were black bucket seats and a 4-speed transmission. Oh yea, we had found us a classic heavy metal hot rod. Then, we all stopped and looked at each other and asked who would let something like this sit and rust away. Well that question was fixing to be answered my friend.

Directly behind the old farm house about ¼ of a mile away was a new brick house, and you guessed it somebody did live there.  Mr. Duplessy which had owned and operated the farm for more than 50 years lived there, and oh yea he was the original owner of the Chevelle.

After a few moments of explaining to Mr. Duplessy who we were and who our kinfolks were, where we lived, and what we did for a living, the conversation turned toward the car. I said, “It seemed such a waste to let this classic just sit and rust away, this car needs to be restored to its once past glory” and you know what he agreed, and sold me the car on the spot for $600.

This ole Chevy still had a lot to offer, but like some of us, it just needed someone to pay it a little attention. This rather reminds me of a preacher named Jeremiah.

Jeremiah had grown weary of telling God’s people what God wanted them to do, and they were not listening – he was confused and distraught; however, just before he gave up God spoke to him and said, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things in which you do not know.”
