VALDOSTA, Lowndes County, Ga. — A September 14, Sunday night fire forced the sudden closure of Fazoli’s on North St. Augustine Road after flames tore through part of the building’s roof. Thanks to a vigilant customer who alerted staff, no one was injured.
According to the Valdosta Fire Department (VFD), crews were dispatched to the restaurant around 9:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived, they found the southeast side of the building engulfed in flames.
Working alongside the Valdosta Police Department and South Georgia EMS, firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control quickly, preventing further spread. Thick smoke billowed into the night sky as employees and first responders moved to secure the scene.
Inside the restaurant, staff were preparing to close for the evening when a customer in the drive-thru noticed flames on the roof and immediately sounded the alarm. That alert allowed workers to evacuate safely before the fire intensified.
Fazoli’s managing partner Nicholas James praised the customer’s life-saving action, saying, “I thank you guys so much. Reach out to me. We would be more than happy to buy you some Fazoli’s when we’re back up and running.”
The fire’s cause remains under investigation. While early reports suggested an electrical issue, the VFD has not released an official determination. Fire investigators are expected to continue their review in the coming days.
The restaurant will remain closed while damage assessments and repairs are completed. No timeline has yet been announced for reopening.
Community Relief and Gratitude
For many in Valdosta, Fazoli’s is more than just a place to eat; it’s a community spot for families, students, and travelers. News of the fire has prompted an outpouring of relief that no one was hurt — and gratitude toward the customer whose quick thinking may have prevented a tragedy.
