Lakeland Street Feed: A Community’s Commitment to Combating Hunger
By Carol A. Gasser Moore
LAKELAND, Lanier County, Georgia – In the heart of Lakeland, Georgia, a grassroots initiative known as the Lakeland Street Feed is making a significant impact in the fight against hunger. Every other Wednesday at 5 p.m., residents gather at 14 S Valdosta Road to share a meal, foster community spirit, and support those in need.
Organized by local volunteers, the Lakeland Street Feed operates on a simple yet powerful principle: bringing people together to ensure no one in the community goes hungry. The event offers not just nourishment but also a sense of belonging and solidarity among attendees.
The initiative relies entirely on community support. Volunteers contribute by preparing and serving meals, donating food items, and offering their time to create a welcoming environment for all. Those interested in participating or donating can contact the organizers at 229-482-5130.
The Lakeland Street Feed complements other local efforts to address food insecurity. For instance, the Lanier County Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) provides assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to eligible residents. Additionally, the Coastal Plain Area Economic Opportunity Authority offers various community services aimed at alleviating poverty in the region.
As the Lakeland Street Feed continues to grow, it stands as a testament to the power of community-driven solutions in addressing pressing social issues. Through collective effort and compassion, the residents of Lakeland are making strides toward a future where everyone has access to the basic necessity of food.
