MITCHELL COUNTY TEACHER CHARGED IN CHILD EXPLOITATION INVESTIGATION *

MITCHELL COUNTY, Ga. – A Mitchell County middle school teacher is facing multiple felony charges following a multi-state child exploitation investigation involving law enforcement agencies in Georgia, Delaware and Florida.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced that Willie James Silas, 34, of Baconton, has been charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation of Children, one count of Grooming of a Minor for Sexual Offense, and one count of Child Molestation. Authorities said Silas was employed as a teacher at Mitchell County Middle School at the time of his arrest.
According to the GBI, the agency’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit began investigating the case in April after receiving a request for assistance from the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware. Investigators there had reportedly received information involving a child victim in Delaware, which ultimately led authorities to Georgia and later to Florida.
Silas was arrested May 5 in St. Augustine, Florida, and initially booked into the St. Johns County Jail. Officials said he has since been extradited back to Georgia and is currently being held in the Mitchell County Jail.
The investigation involved cooperation between several agencies, including the New Castle County Police Department in Delaware, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office and the Camilla Police Department.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details about the alleged victim or the circumstances surrounding the accusations.
The investigation is part of the ongoing work of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a nationwide initiative coordinated through the U.S. Department of Justice. The task force works to identify and investigate individuals accused of exploiting children online and distributing child sexual abuse material.
In recent years, law enforcement agencies across Georgia have continued to warn parents about the growing dangers children face online, particularly through social media platforms, gaming apps and messaging services where predators may attempt to contact minors.
