Lakeland narrows police chief search to three finalists after Slusher retirement *

LAKELAND, Ga. — The City of Lakeland has narrowed its search for a new police chief to three finalists as officials move toward selecting a successor to retired Police Chief Michael Slusher.
City officials announced this week that Drew Campbell, Roger Purvis and Justice Jones have been identified as the candidates considered best qualified for the position. The Lakeland City Council is scheduled to meet at 5 p.m. June 10 and may make a final selection on that date.
The announcement was made in compliance with Georgia law requiring public disclosure of finalists for executive public positions before a hiring decision is finalized.
Lakeland began searching for a replacement after Slusher’s retirement earlier this year left a vacancy in the department’s top leadership position. The next chief will oversee department operations, officer supervision, budgeting, policy development and training while serving as the city’s top law enforcement administrator.
According to the city, the position also requires maintaining professional and ethical standards within the department and working closely with city officials and the community on public safety issues.
Georgia law requires police chiefs serving as sworn officers to maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training certification and complete executive leadership training approved by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police.
Documents released by the city show the three finalists bring differing backgrounds in law enforcement, administration and supervisory leadership from agencies across South Georgia and beyond.
Campbell, a former chief in Coolidge, has experience in police administration and municipal government leadership. Purvis brings decades of law enforcement experience and command-level service. Jones also submitted credentials outlining law enforcement training and supervisory experience.
The city released candidate materials and supporting documentation alongside the announcement of finalists.
