An Update from Congressman Austin Scott

Dear Georgian,

Our law enforcement officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe, but with the rise of social media and polarization in our country, their job has become increasingly more dangerous.

We have seen this violence recently here in Georgia from Atlanta to Warner Robins to Tifton.

These instances leave families without loved ones, and they leave our communities less safe as a result.

Last week, we tragically lost Officer Caleb Abney of the Hahira Police Department in the line of duty. Officer Abney was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck by a vehicle.

We must all come together and pray for the safety of our law enforcement officers who give so much to keep us safe and we must work towards a safer future for all Americans.

As always, my staff and I are here to help. If you need assistance with a federal agency or have comments or concerns to share with me, please do not hesitate to call my Warner Robins, Tifton, or Washington, D.C. offices. To receive frequent updates, I encourage you to visit my website, like my Facebook page, follow me on YouTube, and follow me on Twitter.

Keep reading for the full update.

Sincerely,

Congressman Austin Scott

Presenting Flags to Tifton Police Department Officers

Last December, two of our Tifton Police Department officers were wounded in the line of duty, serving and protecting our community.

This past week, I was proud to present Detectives Jerry Fulford and Michael Gaskins with two United States Flags that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. to honor their service. I am pleased that I was able to present these flags to two brave men on their feet and on the road to recovery.

Speaking to Veterans High School AP Government Students

Last Thursday, I was honored to speak with around 100 AP Government students at Veterans High School.

I spoke about my work and experience in Congress and participated in a Q&A with the students to discuss everything from the Second Amendment to missions and support for Robins Air Force Base.

The students at Veterans High School were attentive listeners and asked good questions. Our youth are the future of our country and if these students are an indicator, we have a bright future.

Visting Habitat for Humanity

My final stop last week was with Habitat for Humanity in Warner Robins who is doing hard work in their mission to help provide housing to less fortunate families.

The Warner Robins Habitat for Humanity had almost completed an 1100 square foot home for a single father and his family. I was interested to hear about the work they have accomplished, and will continue to do, in our community.

Rep. Scott presents flags to wounded officers

TIFTON — On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Austin Scott, R-Ga., presented three American flags that were flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of the Tifton Police Department detectives injured in early December.

Scott presented a flag to Detective Jerry Fulford, one to Detective Michael Gaskins and one to Police Chief Steve Hyman, to honor the entire TPD.

Scott, of Tifton, shared his thanks for the work of Tifton police officers and his heartfelt wishes for healing of the two detectives.

Following the presentation of flags, Hyman presented Fulford with a promotion to senior patrolman, something that was originally planned to take place on Dec. 5, the same day the officers were injured.

The officers were trying to serve a search warrant that morning in the 800 block of Lee Avenue, according to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation release at the time.

The GBI said a resident inside the house opened fire and wounded Fulford and Gaskins. He barricaded himself inside the house but later surrendered. The suspect, Davy Deonte Royal, was found dead in his cell Dec. 8 at the Coffee County Jail.

The GBI said his death appeared to have been self-inflicted.

Present at Wednesday’s ceremony were many of the first responders from surrounding local and state agencies who responded to the scene on Dec. 5.
