Search for Missing Americus Woman Ends in Tragedy

AMERICUS, Sumter County, Ga. — The search for a missing Sumter County woman has ended in tragedy after authorities confirmed they found her body Tuesday evening.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said Caroline Durrance, 65, was discovered dead Aug. 26, two days after she was last seen leaving her home in the 100 block of Cartwright Road around 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Durrance had been the subject of a community-wide search after law enforcement issued a missing person alert, saying she might have been traveling in a 1998 black Honda CRV with Georgia tag YPY406.

No additional details about where Durrance was found or the circumstances of her death have been released. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
