SOUTH GEORGIA — The 2025 Memorial Day holiday weekend ended with a sobering toll on Georgia roads, particularly within the Troop H district. Two lives were lost in fatal crashes investigated by Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Post 15 in Perry, highlighting the region’s tragic contribution to a weekend marred by preventable road fatalities across the state.

Statewide Impact: 14 Killed, Nearly 189 Injured

According to preliminary data from the Georgia Department of Public Safety, 14 people were killed and nearly 189 others were injured during the 78-hour travel period that began Friday, May 23, at 6:00 p.m., and ended Monday, May 26, at 11:59 p.m.

  • GSP Troopers handled 6 fatal crashes resulting in 4 deaths.
  • Local law enforcement agencies investigated 12 crashes, accounting for 10 fatalities.

Among the most affected regions were metro Atlanta and surrounding suburbs in Troop C, with 8 fatalities reported by local departments including Clayton County PD, Cobb County PD, Gwinnett County PD, and South Fulton PD.

Other areas impacted include:

  • Douglasville (Troop D): 1 death

  • Statesboro (Troop F): 1 death
  • Brunswick (Troop I): 1 death

Troops A, B, and G reported no fatalities.

  • 13,000 citations and 18,000 warnings issued
  • More than 1,050 distracted driving violations
  • Nearly 1,800 seatbelt citations
  • 300+ child restraint violations
