VPD maintains its commitment to public safety

VALDOSTA, Lowndes County, Georgia –  The Valdosta Police Department (VPD) maintained its commitment to public safety during the week of April 21–27, 2025, with several notable law enforcement activities.​

Arrests and Incidents

Convicted Felon Arrested with Firearm

On April 26, around 1:45 a.m., officers responded to a call about a man carrying a shotgun in the 500 block of JL Lomax Drive. The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Ezzie Smith, attempted to evade officers but was eventually apprehended in a vacant field. A rifle was recovered nearby, and Smith, a convicted felon, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.​

Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest

Earlier in the week, a routine traffic stop resulted in the arrest of a 35-year-old Lowndes County man. Officers discovered over two pounds of marijuana, 17 grams of ecstasy, and cash indicative of narcotics sales in the vehicle. The driver was charged with felony possession of MDMA with intent to distribute, felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and a misdemeanor traffic violation.

Community Engagement and Initiatives

Upcoming Hiring Event

The VPD is hosting an open testing hiring event on Saturday, May 3, at 9 a.m. at the department’s headquarters located at 500 N. Toombs St. This event is the initial stage of the hiring process for those interested in a law enforcement career. Applicants should bring a valid driver’s license and a $15 testing fee. Successful candidates will be sent to the police academy as City of Valdosta employees, receiving pay during training.

Traffic Enforcement Grant Awarded

The VPD was awarded a $27,081.92 traffic enforcement grant by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. This grant recognizes the department’s efforts in coordinating the Southern Region Traffic Enforcement Network and aims to enhance road safety initiatives.

Ongoing Efforts

The VPD continues to address crime proactively through community policing, specialized units, and public engagement. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities and participate in community programs to foster a safer environment for all.​
