SHERIFF COUNSELS:    Deputies WILL stop speeding above posted limit and careless drivers

By Carol A. Gasser Moore

LANIER COUNTY, Georgia – Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton posted this warning on Facebook:

“I’m seeing / having no problems driving and traveling our roads now at 50 or 55 mph. Deputies WILL stop speeding above the posted limit and careless drivers. There’s still icy conditions on the roads and it should refreeze into black ice tonight.. again. I’d think you have a responsibility to get the snow and ice off these vehicles where it’s not causing accidents or hitting oncoming traffic.”

The advisory came via Facebook as well as conversation in the wake of the historic 2025 Winter Storm which dropped a record setting amount of snow locally.

In the days leading up to the warning, roads were icy and snow packed which created hazardous driving conditions all over the Lanier County area.

On Wednesday, January 24 at the storms end, Norton indicated:  “8:00 AM… Deputy says for HIM, max MAYBE 30 / 35mph? And be very careful. Ice everywhere. There is a lot of ice.  Driving isn’t recommend. DOT IS HEADED OUR WAY WITH SAND/SALT. Access Georgia GDOT driving conditions information by dialing…. 511.”

Please remember that the Lanier County Sheriff’s Office states,

  • There are now no problems driving and traveling Lanier County roads now at 50 or 55 mph.
