Public Notice of Lanier County Commissioners’ Called Meeting October 8
By Carol A. Gasser Moore |
LAKELAND, Ga. — The Lanier County Board of Commissioners has announced a special meeting for Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., to review the county’s property tax digest and five-year history of assessments and valuations. The session will take place at the Lanier County Annex, located at 162 West Thigpen Avenue, Lakeland, GA.
According to the official notice, the meeting will provide an opportunity for the board to analyze trends in property valuations, assess how changes over recent years have affected county revenues and taxpayers, and consider steps forward. County officials encourage interested citizens to attend, ask questions, and voice concerns. Those with specific inquiries may contact the Lanier County Board of Commissioners at 229-483-2088.
Why It Matters
The tax digest represents the basis for calculating property taxes, making its accuracy and equity essential to both county operations and taxpayer fairness. By examining a five-year history, the commission can better understand whether assessments have been consistent, fair, and justified by market changes. In Georgia, the state’s Department of Revenue oversees digest compliance and reviews county submissions for uniformity and correctness.
Residents have previously voiced concerns in Lanier County over sharp increases in assessed values and limited explanations from county offices. The upcoming meeting presents a forum for public oversight and accountability.
What to Expect
- Presentation of revenue and valuation trends from the past five years
- Discussion of how assessments have shifted across property types
- Review of state compliance or audit results
- May include proposals or recommendations affecting future millage rates or assessment policies
- Public comment or question period (if allowed by the board)

Since assessments were not done for seventeen years and last year residents were hit with large increases to make up for the county not doing their job for seventeen years. I’m not sure if this meeting is worth anyone’s time. Last year when the public was speaking, the committee was doodling on their note pads. It made us feel like they didn’t care and we didn’t matter. If property taxes go up again, I don’t see how retirees can pay another increase. We will be taxed out of our homes.
I know exactly what you mean. On the other hand, nothing changes if citizens stop their momentum … at least that’s the Lanier County News philosophy. The LCN is working to make contacting or knowing who/how to contact as easy as possible because a united vocal group AKA “squeaky wheel” is more likely to get a positive response. It is the LCN opinion that Lanier County “governance habits” didn’t get in this condition except by the elected noticing that way too many citizens don’t pay attention to what they are doing! Thank you for reading the Lanier County News and sharing your viewpoint!
I’ve lived in Lanier County my entire life and have been a homeowner since the age of 19. I’m now 66. I’ve never had an increase in real estate taxes comparable to last year’s. If the current rate keeps up, I’m going to have no choice but to relocate to a less expensive area. Between homeowners insurance doubling and taxes practically doubling, I’ll have no choice. I never thought that would be an issue for me. But I never thought I’d ever have to live on Social Security Disability either. There should be some sort of respect, out of a better way of putting it, for those of us who have dedicated our lives to making this our home instead of graduating high school and hitting the road, never to look back. I was an employee of FMB for 28 years and raised my child here. My late husband was active in community service, as was I during the years that I was working. And our one child graduated from high school here, just as we both did. But here I am, still paying school taxes, with never anyone else in school. I don’t feel obligated to pay for a new recreational park. But here we are, and I’m not alone. Many of my friends are in the same situation. This is more than ridiculous. We aren’t Lowndes County. We don’t have the services they have, the shopping or entertainment that they have, so stop acting like we are.
Your point is well spoken! Thank you for sharing your comment! Thank you for reading the Lanier County News!
