Georgia PSC Chairman Jason Shaw Leads Efforts in Energy Planning and Regulatory Oversight

By Carol A. Gasser Moore

GEORGIA – Since April 14, 2025, Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) Chairman Jason Shaw has been actively engaged in overseeing the state’s energy planning processes and regulatory activities.

Overseeing Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Process

Chairman Shaw has been instrumental in guiding the PSC’s six-month Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) process. The IRP is a comprehensive strategy that outlines Georgia Power’s plans for meeting the state’s future energy needs. Under Shaw’s leadership, the PSC has emphasized public participation, encouraging Georgians to attend public hearings and submit comments. The process includes multiple public hearings, with the first hour of each day reserved for public comment, allowing residents to voice their opinions on energy policies that affect them.

Approval of New Rule for Data Center Power Usage

In January, the PSC, led by Chairman Shaw, approved a new rule that allows Georgia Power to establish specific power usage terms for new data centers. This rule aims to protect ratepayers from potential cost shifts associated with the increased energy demands of data centers. The decision was part of the PSC’s broader efforts to ensure that the state’s energy infrastructure can accommodate emerging industries while maintaining fairness for all consumers.

Upcoming PSC Elections and Term Extensions

The Georgia legislature has passed House Bill 1312, which extends the terms of PSC members from six to eight years. This extension is designed to maintain a staggered election cycle following a federal court ruling that postponed PSC elections due to concerns over voter representation. As a result, Chairman Shaw’s term will be extended, allowing for continued leadership in overseeing the state’s utility regulations.

Chairman Shaw’s leadership continues to shape Georgia’s energy policies, balancing the state’s growth with the need for sustainable and equitable energy solutions.
