Representative Burchett Elected House Majority Whip for 2025-2026

GEORGIA – State Representative James Burchett (R-Waycross) of District 176 has been elected to serve as the House Majority Whip for the 2025-2026 legislative term by the House Republican Caucus. Burchett’s election took place during the House Majority Caucus elections held Tuesday, November 12.
Burchett becomes the second-ranking member of the Republican Party’s leadership. Both the assistant majority leader and assistant minority leader of the House are commonly called “whips”. The main function of the majority and minority whips is to gather votes of their respective parties on major issues.
In a press release from the House of Representatives, Majority Whip Burchett has stated,, “I am honored to have been elected to the office of House Majority Whip for a second term. I look forward to continuing to serve my district, the state of Georgia and our members as the Republican caucus continues to lead in the House of Representatives.”
Burchett went on to say, “We’ve delivered successful conservative legislation for Georgia families over the last legislative term, and I have no doubt that under the guidance of Speaker Burns and our entire leadership team, we will continue championing policies to further enhance public safety, healthcare and support for Georgians. As Majority Whip and with the assistance of our entire whip team, we will continue to guarantee that our members are supported and that they are able to move our state forward with principled conservative legislation.”
As Majority Whip, Whip Burchett is tasked with overseeing legislation as it progresses through both chambers of the General Assembly and assisting Majority Caucus members in understanding the nuances of bills and resolutions.
Representative James Burchett currently represents the citizens of District 176, which includes Atkinson and Lanier counties and portions of Coffee, Lowndes and Ware counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2019 and currently serves as the House Majority Whip. He also serves on the Ethics, Judiciary, Judiciary Non-Civil and Transportation committees and as an Ex-Officio member of the Rules Committee.
