Sheriff: “If You Do This to a Child in Lanier County, I WILL Put You in Jail”; Couple Charged with Felony Child Cruelty *
Sheriff Says Child Allegedly Forced to Sleep in Disturbing Conditions
By Carol A. Gasser Moore / * Inglés y español |
LAKELAND, Ga. — Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton issued one of his strongest public statements to date this week after deputies arrested two adults on felony child cruelty charges stemming from what he described as disturbing conditions in which a child was allegedly made to sleep.
“If you do this to a child in Lanier County, I WILL put you in jail,” Norton wrote in a public social media statement. “I don’t care if you are a Rabbi.”
The sheriff clarified that the photographs accompanying his post showed the location where investigators say the child was made to sleep. His reference to a rabbi appeared to emphasize that no person’s profession, title or religious status places them above the law. Authorities have not indicated that either defendant is a rabbi.
- Tekesha Garland, 41, charged with:
- Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree (Felony)
- Reckless Conduct (Misdemeanor)
- Reginald Albert Garland Jr., 36, charged with:
- Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree (Felony)
- Reckless Conduct (Misdemeanor)
- Obstruction of a Law Enforcement Officer (Misdemeanor)
- Giving a False Name to a Law Enforcement Officer (Misdemeanor)
Both were booked into the Lanier County Jail.
Serious Allegations
Although investigators have not yet released the incident report or warrant affidavits, the sheriff’s comments indicate deputies believed the child’s sleeping conditions were serious enough to warrant felony criminal charges.
Georgia law defines Cruelty to Children in the Second Degree as intentionally allowing a child under the age of 18 to witness the commission of a forcible felony, battery or family violence battery, or causing a child cruel or excessive physical or mental pain under circumstances specified by law. The offense is punishable as a felony.
The misdemeanor reckless conduct charges allege conduct creating an unreasonable risk to another person’s safety.
The additional charges against Reginald Garland suggest investigators allege he interfered with deputies during the investigation and provided false identifying information.

Investigation Continues
As of publication, authorities have not released:
- the child’s age;
- how long the alleged sleeping conditions existed;
- whether other children were present in the home;
- whether the child suffered physical injuries;
- how deputies first became involved;
- whether the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) has intervened; or
- whether additional charges may be forthcoming.
The Lanier County News has requested the incident report, arrest warrants and supporting affidavits, which typically contain the factual basis supporting criminal charges. Those records are expected to provide additional details regarding the investigation and the alleged conditions discovered by deputies.

- Unsafe or unsanitary living conditions.
- Inadequate sleeping arrangements or shelter.
- Untreated medical needs.
- Signs of emotional trauma or fear.

- Conducta imprudente (delito menor)
- Conducta imprudente (delito menor)

- la edad del menor;
- cuánto tiempo existieron las condiciones de sueño alegadas;
- si había otros menores viviendo en la residencia;
- si el niño sufrió lesiones físicas;
- cómo se involucraron inicialmente los agentes en el caso;
