LOWNDES COUNTY, Ga. – Ten days after the fatal shooting of an employee and the wounding by gunfire of three other workers, the owners of Jay Boys Truck Stop and Travel Center in Valdosta have yet to speak publicly about the tragedy. Nor have they identified steps the company is taking to protect employees in the future.
A message left with Jay Boys principal Karen Annette Johnson at her Madison, Florida office Wednesday, May 13, went unreturned.
The May 3 shooting resulted in the death of 21-year-old Jay Boy’s employee Damani Bentley of Valdosta.,
He died at the scene of the shooting.
Three other workers received gunshot wounds and were transported to South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta.
Authorities say Bentley and the other employees were shot at their job at 11:45 a.m. Bentley was outside of the business when killed.
The truck stop and travel center at exit 16 on the east side of Interstate 75 at 3661 Madison Hwy.opened just a few days before the shootings.
Investigators identified the alleged gunman as Jabari Nelms of Valdosta. In custody at the Lowndes County Jail, Nelms faces a murder charge, and investigators say additional charges are likely as the case develops.
Investigators have not identified a motive, and authorities have released few details about what led to the shooting.
Jay Boy’s shut down for a couple of days after the tragedy. It has reopened except for the A&W Restaurant inside the travel center, an employee said Wednesday night. It should reopen in a few days, the worker said.
The business is owned by Karen Annette Johnson and her family, including her sons Jacob L. Johnson and Jarod K. Johnson
