Lightening Strike Sends Flames Through the Roof, Hope Through the Ashes: A Hahira Family’s Story
By Carol A. Gasser Moore
HAHIRA, Lowndes County, Georgia – It began with a flash—a jagged bolt of lightning tearing through the late June sky over Hahira, Georgia. Moments later, smoke curled skyward from the Lewis family’s rooftop, a silent signal of the disaster unfolding inside. In a matter of minutes, what had been a cherished home filled with laughter, memories, and the quiet resilience of a family recently rocked by a serious medical diagnosis, was engulfed in flames.
The lightning struck their roof directly, igniting a fire that raced into the attic. Fueled by the dry summer heat, it tore through insulation, timber, and ceilings. It wasn’t long before the blaze breached the living space, consuming everything the family owned—clothes, furniture, heirlooms, photo albums that told the story of their lives. The fire didn’t just destroy a house; it dismantled a sanctuary.
And yet, as the embers cooled, something powerful rose from the ruin: community.
Neighbors came with blankets. Friends showed up with casseroles and tearful hugs. Strangers donated shoes and toothbrushes and stood in line to offer help. It wasn’t long before family friend Tiffany Salomon created a GoFundMe page, aiming to raise $50,000 to help the Lewises rebuild what the fire had taken.
“We’ve lost everything,” the family shared in a message on the page. “But your kindness—the gift cards, the donations, the prayers—has given us strength. We’re trying to move forward with dignity and hope, and we’re so grateful for every hand reaching out to help us.”
The Lewis family wasn’t just fighting fire. They were already navigating a medical crisis that had left them emotionally and financially drained. The fire felt cruel in its timing—arriving when they could least afford another blow. And yet, in their darkest hour, Hahira lit a different kind of fire: one of compassion.
What the lightning took in seconds, the community is helping to restore with hearts wide open and hands willing to lift. It’s not just about rebuilding a house—it’s about rebuilding a life.

Aftermath of the fire

Why raise money when you have a 2 million dollar policy on the home. The insurance would cover housing and lost items as well as home
Tiffany is the same person that was charged with battery of the elderly lady that was in this fire back 2021 so now she’s able to collect money off of them. She’s a money hungry lady. Pray for these poor elderly folks having to live with her now. Go fund me account for 50,000 but having a 2 million dollar policy is ridiculous and ripping off the community
