From VSU to the Top: Woods, Hanson, and Wills Shape Georgia’s Future

GEORGIA – Richard Woods, Georgia’s State School Superintendent and a 1996 graduate of Valdosta State University (VSU), has been named one of Georgia Trend’s 100 Most Influential Georgians for 2025. This recognition highlights his leadership in advancing educational initiatives across the state.

Woods has been instrumental in shaping Georgia’s educational landscape. He unveiled the Georgia Department of Education’s 2025 legislative priorities, focusing on safety, success, and support within schools . In response to the tragic Apalachee High School shooting, Woods advocated for enhanced school safety measures, including increased mental health resources and improved information sharing among agencies . Additionally, he has championed literacy initiatives, implementing a $10 million federal program to place literacy coaches in low-performing schools .
Joining Woods on Georgia Trend’s prestigious list are fellow VSU alumni Larry Hanson and Dave Wills. Hanson, who earned a Bachelor of General Studies from VSU in 1995, serves as the executive director and CEO of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA). Under his leadership, GMA has supported legislation benefiting cities statewide and recognized municipalities like Perry with the 2025 Visionary City Award for innovative economic development programs .

Wills, a 2007 Master of Public Administration graduate from VSU, is the executive director of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). He has overseen initiatives such as the Georgia County Excellence Awards, which honor counties for innovative solutions to local challenges.
