Man found dead hanging from tree in north rural Lanier County: What we know so far

By Carol A. Gasser Moore

LANIER COUNTY, Georgia – A person visiting a family grave at the Empire Church Cemetery on Wednesday, January 29 made a difficult discovery.  The person spotted a dead man hanging from a tree in the corner of the cemetery.  A call about the discovery was made to Tri-county E911 Call Center around 1:00 p.m. for assistance.

The Lanier County Sheriff’s Office, the Lanier County Emergency Management Agency and the Lakeland Fire Department responded to the emergency call summons.  There were no county firefighters available to respond at the time the emergency call came into the E911 center.

The discovery was immediately handled as a crime scene since it involved finding a dead body.  After a couple hours of investigation, officials determined there were no signs of foul play.  The man’s death was labeled as a suicide.

According to Lanier County Sheriff Nick Norton, the deceased man had grown up in Lanier County and graduated from Lanier County High School.

This is a developing story and will be updated as information is made available.

This wasn’t no suicide! You’re telling me he hung himself in a cemetery and decided to undress..?

These details are all wrong. The call went to 911 at 11:08 am. Responders arrived swiftly. The man was NOT nude. He was fully dressed! I don’t know how the details are so wrong but this should have been better verified before publishing.

My heart goes out to this man, that was suffering from severe depression. Only when someone
doesn’t see a way out, does he take the ultimate step. My heart goes out for his family if he has one

The Lanier County News also extends its heartfelt sympathy to the loss experienced by this man’s family and friends.

This writer’s first career for three decades was with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in community education. The fact that a depressed person is usually ‘feeling better’ and taking more positive actions when suicide occurs, is one reason that the deceased person’s actions catch family and friends off guard. By awareness of the problem we each have a chance to more positively support our own mental health and that of our family and friends.

In the United States alone, there are over 4,000 people each year who commit suicide. This is the second very public suicide by someone in Lanier County in the last couple of months. It is a tragic and sad reality.

I sincerely hope that we each pray for not only the victim and his family, but the person who found him, the first responders who handled him, and others affected by this tragedy.

Carol, please get all the facts before posting an article especially when it’s about the death of someone!

So well said @Editor . Prayers & sincerest condolences to all touched by this tragedy 🙏

If you worked in mental health for that long you should really be ashamed of yourself for writing the details of this suicide to the public and starting gossip. You have no idea how much more you have hurt this family by posting something that was no one else’s business. All you had to say was he was found dead and ruled a suicide. For the record I worked in mental health for many years as well and I don’t know how you even remotely thought this was ok. And another for the record he was not nude at all so make sure you have FACTS before writing a news story.

Very insensitive reporting to report found naked, have some compassion for his family and for his friends.

This article and especially the headline along with the photos is very disrespectful in my opinion. Matters like this need to be handled with a lot more discretion. It seems in bad taste to include pictures of the scene. Events like this are shattering to the families and loved ones involved, and, it just doesn’t seem right to advertise the event in such a cold manner.

This is sad. Open and close case.
How can they say no foul play. Who does this with no note no explanation

  7. Eimi on January 30, 2025 at 11:18 pm

The statement that the gentleman was nude is incorrect. He was fully clothed literally… from head to toe. The writer should do the right thing and retract the incorrect statement and make a revision to the article.

Fake news! False statements! Carol Moore you should be ashamed of yourself! You have no true idea of what you’re writing about. Your been better off writing a news blurb for Bridgerton!
