The Past Comes to Life as Lowndes Unseals Time Capsule

VALDOSTA – Time seemed to momentarily stand still July 2 as Lowndes County officials unsealed a capsule outside the county’s historic courthouse telling of local life 50 years ago. 
Part of the nation’s 250th birthday celebration, the unveiling of the time capsule brought huge anticipation as a crowd of about 120 people waited to see what the people of Valdosta and Lowndes County buried for them to see 50 years later.
“It had a lot of papers,” said Lowndes County spokeswoman Megah Barwick in an interview.
And a Sears Catalogue.
The time capsule opening drew about 120 people curious to see what it held.
An American flag.
A local phonebook.
An edition of the Valdosta Daily Times newspaper for July 4, 1976. 
A small replica of an aircraft from Moody Air Force Base.
A banner proclaiming the Lowndes County Sesquicentennial, 1825-1975.
“And a lot of letters from people in the community,” Barwick said. “There were a ton of them.”
The crowd that attended “loved seeing what was reveled from the time capsule,” she said.
Several who attended were children when it was buried, Barwick noted.
It took some digging to reach the time capsule.
Fetching the time capsule required some effort.
And one person on hand, Tyson McLane, chaired the committee that put the time capsule together, she said.
Lowndes County will continue the tradition by burying a new time capsule to be opened 50 years hence, in 2076. 
“Yes, there will be one buried again this fall to be dug up in 50 years,” Barwick said.
