LANIER COUNTY, Georgia – “Due to the negative impacts of heavy rainfall in parts of South and East Georgia”, Governor Brian Kemp has extended his Executive Order 11.08.24.01 until Wednesday, November 20th.  The Executive Order declares a State of Emergency for Lanier County and 23 other South Georgia Counties.

The original order was issued Friday, November 8 and set to expire on Wednesday, November 13.  Governor Kemp made the declaration because of the heavy rainfall in both South and East Georgia on Wednesday, November 6th and Thursday, November 7th.  The rainfall was heavy enough to start severe flooding in the affected areas.

In a regional area already devastated from Hurricane Helene at the end of September, the region has either caused water levels in creeks and rivers to rise.  The order indicates the water levels are expected to lead to major flooding as well the washing out of roads and bridges.  Flooding can lead to the isolation of area residents in the flood zones and decrease citizen’s ability to access vital supplies and services.

Lanier County is one of twenty-four (24) counties named in the Governor’s Executive Order.  In addition to Lanier, Atkinson, Ben Hill, Bryan, Candler, Chatham, Dodge, Effingham, Emanuel, Evans, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jefferson, Laurens, Lowndes, Montgomery, Screven, Tattnall, Telfair, Toombs, Treutlen and Wheeler Counties are also names in the order.
