|CALIFORNIA – California-based production company ONEDOOR STUDIOS is developing original motion picture and streaming series entertainment that does more than sweep global audiences into a high-octane experience. What sets ONEDOOR STUDIOS apart in mainstream Hollywood is their commitment to producing stories with deep veins of hope, beauty and goodness. |
“We are as eager as everyone else to find powerhouse entertainment. We believe the most audience worthy stories are those speaking to the deepest part of us, inspiring us to be the best version of ourselves we can be,” explains Jason Brents, co-founder of ONEDOOR STUDIOS. With a rich background in international education, Jason brings a treasure trove of multi-ethnic stories and business relationships to the company. “We aim to provide original content with the inspirational power of true stories like Braveheart and Hacksaw Ridge, sweeping epics like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and boundary-pushing allegories as deep as The Matrix and Narnia.”
ONEDOOR STUDIOS currently has a slate of six motion picture and series projects, and a co-production agreement for THE DREAMER with Ronald Nair’s Multiple Streams Pictures. Five of their six projects are also franchises that will feed the current global appetite for streaming series.
ONEDOOR STUDIOS’ premiere film in development is Calculated, a powerful new YA action-adventure series based on the first novel in the series by the same name, publishing February 2021. From pre-sales alone the novel has already hit #1 on the bestseller lists in multiple Amazon categories and has strong reviews from major critics.
Calculated is the story of Josephine Rivers, a calculating prodigy with a nearly supernatural ability to look at the world through a purely mathematical lens, at times even predicting the future. After her family betrays her when she’s only 15, she’s kidnapped and taken to China by the sinister Maxima, known as “Madame,” who forces her to use her gift to increase her fortune. This marks the beginning of our hero’s arduous journey, which sees her moved around Shanghai’s criminal underground as others exploit her gift. Her only close company is older captive Hong Rui, nicknamed “Red,” whose wisdom and support change how she views her own power and teaches her what she must do to survive. Now she’s 17 and working for a wealthy man whose captivating son Kai starts to chip away at her emotional defenses. She has the fate of the world in her hands, thanks to her unique gifts, but she also craves vengeance against those who’ve wronged her. Can she save the world from a financial collapse and also bring her enemies down? And can she trust Kai enough to let him into her heart?
“Calculated is being developed as a motion picture franchise set for global, major studio release. Given the ever-increasing demand for powerful streaming series, Calculated’s rich story bed will likely lead to following the motion pictures’ release with a deep dive into 1-hour streaming episodes,” explains Co-Founder John Lee.
Lorie Langdon, best-selling author of DOON and OLIVIA TWIST, writes “Calculated is smart with plenty of page-turning action and a brave heroine who is deeply relatable. The timely subject matter is heart-wrenching even as it inspires us to use our gifts to make a difference in the world. Twisty and original, this story will keep readers guessing and hoping to its pulse-pounding end!”
Lee explains ONEDOOR STUDIOS’ unique approach: “We exclusively produce motion pictures and series for distribution by major studios and streaming companies. We aim for the top in the industry’s content and business standards. We are dedicated to delivering them what audiences around the world want most in movies and series: stories both highly entertaining and full of hope, truth and beauty.” Lee has provided business, funding or distribution services for twenty-three studio released motion pictures, television network series and specials, with combined production costs of over $470 million and global rights earnings exceeding $4 billion, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Nutty Professor, and Terminator. Lee is also the lead author of The Producer’s Business Handbook, a top selling entertainment industry reference book in its fourth edition, co-branded by Variety and AFM.
“We use the most successful business model in the industry,” adds Stephen Wollwerth, ONEDOOR STUDIOS’ third partner. Wollwerth is a producer, writer, director, cinematographer and editor whose work has been featured on Fox Sports, National Geographic, PBS, and as DP on a feature film called Hope for the Holidays currently on Amazon. “It enables us to reduce the risks in production by returning investor principal before production begins through using bank financing for each project’s biggest expense: its production,” Wollwerth explains. “It’s a win-win for everyone, global audiences most of all. Doing business this way enables us to leverage the production costs.”
“When our producer friends tell us that most or all of their production funding is through private investors, it typically demonstrates they have not set up their project’s distribution,” Brents adds. “Producing without distribution is unfair to the project and everything related to it.”
ONEDOOR STUDIOS producers are giving 25% of all their profits from Calculated to fight human trafficking with their partners at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE).
“We don’t want to restrict the opportunity to invest in our projects to the rich alone,” says Brents. “We’ve launched an equity crowdfunding campaign on WeFunder so anyone with at least $100 can become an investor in Calculated’s development. There has never been a better time to invest in feature film and television content. Demand is high from audiences—which means it’s also high from distributors.”
Lee adds, “Now, with more than 4 billion global consumers on the internet and streaming, a single motion picture or series of ours can brighten the lives of over 1 billion of its targeted viewers! It is challenging work—yet delivers immense personal satisfaction.”
