VALDOSTA – Valdosta police say they arrested a 21-year-old man after his gun accidentally discharged and struck a woman inside a Walmart. 
An investigation of the June 9 shooting inside the Walmart at 3274 Inner Perimeter Road found that the man went into the store with a handgun and a cell phone in the same pocket of his basketball-style shorts. He reached for the phone and the firearm accidentally discharged, police said.
Police say that John Eady, 21, was carrying the handgun in the front pocket of his shorts without a holster. He had his cell phone in the same pocket.
When the gun went off, the bullet struck the floor but shrapnel from the round hitting the floor tiles apparently struck a 34-year-old woman in the ankles, police said.

the Valdosta Walmart store at 3274 Inner Perimeter Road.
The woman received medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers say Eady was carrying the firearm in a manner that was a “gross deviation from the standard of care that a reasonable person would have exercised in a similar situation.”
Officers obtained an arrest warrant for Eady on June 10, on a misdemeanor charge of reckless conduct. Eady was informed of the arrest warrant, and immediately turned himself in at the Valdosta Police Department. He was taken to Lowndes County Jail without incident.
Police said that the investigation remains active and officers are still working to determine exactly what happened.
Police say theythink the incident was isolated and there is no known threat to the public.
“We are very thankful that no one received more severe injuries, as the victim was shopping with her small children,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan. “This serves as a reminder that carrying a firearm is a significant responsibility. Firearms should be carried in a secure holster or in another secure manner to prevent unintentional contact with the trigger, reducing the risk of an unintended discharge. The responsible handling of a firearm is essential to help us keep our community safe.”
