Lanier County Faces Rising Suicide Rates Amid Recent Tragedies
By Carol A. Gasser Moore
LANIER COUNTY, Georgia – Lanier County, Georgia, is grappling with a concerning rise in suicide rates following two recent deaths that have deeply affected the community.
In January, a man was found deceased, hanging from a tree in a rural cemetery in the northern part of the county. The discovery was made by a passerby who promptly alerted authorities. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently handling the case, and while the death is being treated as a suicide, the investigation remains ongoing. Lanier County News Online
In a separate incident, a city employee tragically took his own life. Details surrounding this case have not been publicly disclosed, but the loss has sent shockwaves through the local government and community.
These incidents contribute to a troubling trend in Lanier County. According to data from the Georgia Department of Public Health, the county’s suicide rate has surpassed the national average. While the national age-adjusted suicide rate stands at approximately 14.6 per 100,000 people, Lanier County has experienced a higher rate in recent years.
In response to these tragedies, United2Prevent, a local suicide prevention organization, is hosting a candlelight vigil to honor those lost to suicide and support those affected by its lasting impact.
