UPDATE: Hurricane Helene’s record-breaking rainfall and wind gusts created problems for local postal service
By Carol A. Gasser Moore
LAKELAND, Lanier County, Georgia – Hurricane Helene’s “eye” passed over Lanier County at the end of September 2024. One of the buildings which was heavily damaged was the Lakeland Post Office located at 15 South Valdosta Road. The postal building, which is leased by the United States Postal Service (USPS) experienced significant building damage. It has been closed and its familiar blue outdoor mail drop has disappeared. The Lanier County News (LCN) has learned that repairs to the building are underway.
Within the last week, a general email addressing the repair and remodeling of the Lakeland USPS building has been sent out to area USPS employees. While there is no date set for completion of those repairs, they are underway.
The LCN has learned that the Lakeland Post Office’s roof has been repaired, but there is significant electric and other damage that is in the process of being addressed. Currently, electrical work is ready to go, but it requires an inspection before Georgia Power Company is able to turn the building’s electricity on in the building.
Details of the work yet to be addressed have been requested. This information will be updated as additional particulars are made available.
In the meantime, if you see our local USPS employees, let them know you appreciate them! They have been working in extraordinary conditions to provide the postal service that we receive daily. Hurricane Helene created an unprecedented work experience for everyone involved with preparing, delivering and receiving mail.
Until the work is completed, Lakeland and Lanier County citizens postal needs are being served by Lakeland’s postal employees at the Naylor Post Office building in south Lanier County.
