GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Ashburn

Ashburn, GA (March 1, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Ashburn, GA. The Ashburn Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on March 1, 2023. One man was shot and killed. One officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Preliminary information indicates that Sycamore Police Department was investigating a burglary when they contacted Ashburn Police Department giving them information about a suspect and the description of the vehicle he was traveling in. Ashburn PD officers located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Daniel Scott, age 25, refused to stop. During the pursuit, Scott rammed an Ashburn PD officer’s vehicle with his vehicle, injuring the officer, on MLK Jr. Drive and Toombs Street in Ashburn. Scott got out of the vehicle and officers attempted to arrest him. A brief struggle occurred and eventually officers were able to take the Scott into custody. Scott was placed in the backseat of a police vehicle to be taken to the Turner County Jail. At some point, Scott was able to gain access to the front of the police vehicle and attempted to drive off. As Scott was trying to escape, he began to ram police vehicles. The officers were standing near the vehicles being rammed. Officers shot at the vehicle, hitting Scott. He was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center where he later died. The officer was treated at the hospital and released.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Tift Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
