Life Celebration of Peter T. Moore

Peter Thomas Moore died peacefully at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital on January 3, 2020 in Tallahassee, Florida at the age of 65.

 

Peter is survived by his closest friend and former wife Carol A. Moore in Lakeland GA: children, Mary Joyce (19) of Chattanooga, TN, Emma (16) and Jonathan (16) in Lakeland, GA; and brothers, David L. Moore Jr, Bethany Beach, DE, Stephen J. Moore, Garden City, NY. He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Joyce Moore, St. Simons Island, GA and Garden City, NY.

 

Peter T. Moore was born on November 25, 1954 in Garden City, NY to David and Joyce Moore. Always making the Honor Roll, Pete graduated from Garden City High School in 1972, Washington & Lee University in 1977 with a BA degree in Psychology, a Masters in Education in 2000, Georgia Southern University, and a Masters in Library and Information Science in 2011, Valdosta State University. He married Carol A. Gasser in 2003. Pete taught in the Glynn County School system as a substitute teacher, while he earned his Master’s degree. After graduation, he taught at Mitchell County Middle School, Camilla, GA, secondary school science for Communities in Schools (CIS) in Dougherty County, Albany, GA and Lanier County High School, Lakeland, GA.

 

Peter was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity and JAX Alumnae. He loved to travel. Accomplished at nature research, Pete earned his Georgia Master Naturalist certification in 2002. He was ardent about photographing nature. Pete helped with mosquito research and sea turtle studies, water quality testing and education for the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Brunswick, GA. He was active with the Friends of Sapelo Island as a volunteer. As he rescued several greyhounds, Peter became active with Greyhounds as Pets JAX. Pete was a dedicated individual, who loved our Georgia outdoor environment. He was a member of the Lanier Emergency Management Agency Severe Weather Spotting Team, WWALS Watershed Coalition, Sons of American Legion Squadron #336, MADD South Georgia.  He sometimes served as a freelance photographer for the Lanier County News.

 

Over the last six years, Peter and Carol fostered and adopted Mary Joyce, Emma and Jonathan into their home, which was caring and warm as well as offering a life filled with lots of activities. Pete was passionate about spending quality time with his family. His children remember him as an intellectual type known for his kind gentleness and interest in science and nature, love of animated features (Warner Bros. cartoons and Samurai Jack) and Rock and Roll music. He was a father, who encouraged them to develop and pursue their goals. Pete often volunteered with their children’s’ school activities and son’s Boy Scout Troop #864.

 

A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 1, 11:00am at Music Funeral Services Chapel, 88 W. Main, Lakeland with a reception to follow at Lakeland United Methodist Church Social Hall. Rev. Robert “Bob” Willis will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Peter Thomas Moore’s life.
