StoryMap: Restoring Rare Birds to River Creek

Deep in south Georgia, bird songs welcome the break of dawn at River Creek, the Rolf and Alexandra Kauka Wildlife Management Area.

But in that chorus is a more urgent call. An excited squeaking is answered by high-pitched cheeps.

A red-cockaded woodpecker is calling its fledgling. And the young bird is responding, almost plaintively.

These are the sounds of history being made….
